Situation
Dr. Vanja Abreu, a woman from the Dominican Republic, had been convicted of a health-care-fraud conspiracy and sent to prison. She served roughly three years for a crime the record did not support. Beyond her liberty, her ability to remain and build a future in the United States hung in the balance.
Approach
Fridman took Dr. Abreu's cause pro bono after the Eleventh Circuit threw out her conviction, holding that the evidence for the charge did not exist. He argued her appeal before the Eleventh Circuit and continues to represent her in the effort to be made whole for the years she lost.
